Ingress Protection to IEC 60529

Ingress Protection is applicable to all types of electrical and instrument enclosures, as well as cable glands, and is commonly abbreviated to ‘IP’ with additional digits which follow this abbreviation to define the level of environmental protection.

Combating Galvanic Corrosion at CMP

The type and thickness of nickel coatings applied to brass cable glands varies significantly around the world, and many of the solutions adopted are inherently porous, meaning that they are unable to provide complete protection against chemical attack, corrosion, or material break-down. There are typically two types of nickel plating in common use, these being electro nickel plating and electro-less nickel plating.

Certification to IEC 60079 Based Standards

There are some subtle differences when selecting cable glands, or cable connectors for use in Zones. This is because the National Electric Code (NEC), API and Canadian Electric Code (CEC) wiring requirements take precedence in the United States and Canada over normal IEC practices.

Certification

Before products, equipment, or protective systems can be selected for installation in explosive atmospheres they should first be certified as being suitable for that application. A Certificate of Conformity for equipment intended for use in Explosive Atmospheres is evidence that the product, equipment or protective system conforms and has been tested to a relevant standard.

Cable Glands Permitted Under NEC & CEC Wiring Rules

In the IEC world, there are essentially two different types of cables, armored and unarmored, whilst the test parameters for the cable gland varies, depending on the cable type, the cable glands themselves are not required to be tested on cables, but are instead tested on steel mandrels. Conversely, in the NEC and CEC world, cable glands are tested on cables, with very different test parameters applicable to the different types of armored and unarmored cables. Before selecting a cable gland for use in a classified location, the cable must be permitted and approved for the location and then the cable gland must also be listed for use on that specific type of cable.

Cable Glands Permitted in Hazardous Locations

Under NEC and CEC wiring code rules the use of IEC certified product is not automatically permitted under the zone classification methods. Globally there are now three methods of selection or application of cable entry devices.

Cables Permitted in Hazardous Locations

In accordance with API 500 (14F), API 505 (14FZ), National Electrical Code (NEC) 2020 and C22.1-18 (Canadian Electric Code) any cable for use in a classified location must firstly be of a type permitted in the location, and secondly be tested and approved to standards specific to the application.

IECEx Certified Equipment

Under normal circumstances, because of the national deviations or national differences inherent within the ANSI, UL, ISA and CSA standards published in North America it is not possible to select IECEx ‘only’ certified equipment for use in classified locations defined by NFPA (NEC) Article 505 & API 505 (14FZ), or C22.1-18 Section 18, unless that equipment is also certified and marked with an AEx or Ex codification signifying that it has been assessed, tested and certified to all of the relevant ANSI, UL, ISA or CSA standards, and is installed in accordance with the applicable wiring method and installation code.

United States Coast Guard (USCG)

The USCG permits foreign flagged vessels to operate in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS), however, any Explosionproof or Flameproof type ‘d’ equipment must comply with the requirements set out in USCG 46 CFR. Many of these vessels are classified to international standards, utilizing both IECEx and/or ATEX certified equipment in classified locations.
