Spencer’s Return to CMP: A Student Placement Story

When Spencer Scott first joined CMP, part of the British Engines Group, for a summer placement, he was looking to gain a better understanding of engineering in the real world. One year later, he’s retuned to the business – this time with more experience, more confidence and a supporting role within the technical team.

Currently studying Mechanical Engineering and Energy Engineering at university, Spencer has always been interested in understanding how things work. “I’ve always liked knowing the processes behind things,” he explains, “and being able to create something and perfect it.”

During his initial placement, Spencer spent time in multiple departments, building an understanding of how the business operates. His time in the technical department was what stood out most, where he designed a new cleat range using CAD and produced 3D-printed prototypes. “It was really rewarding to see something I’d designed come to life,” he says.

Returning this year was an easy decision. “The environment was a big factor,” he explains. “Everyone was really helpful – I never felt like I was being a problem by asking questions. People were always willing to take the time to help, even when they were busy.”

With his current placement based entirely within the technical team, Spencer is taking on more responsibility and contributing to live projects. He is currently working on an exciting new product development project alongside Product Manager, Jamie Patterson, where his role has evolved from creating drawings and supporting with pad printing, to building models and assisting with the wider design process.

What has surprised Spencer most is the difference between academic study and working in the industry. “The CAD work at university gave me a great introduction,” he explains. “At CMP, I’ve seen how those skills are applied in a practical environment, with designs being tested and used in real projects.”

Spencer feels his biggest development has been improving his CAD capability, alongside building his understanding of engineering concepts such as short circuit calculations. He has also grown in confidence working as part of a team – something he recognises as equally important in preparing him for the world of work.

His time at CMP has had a clear impact on his future career. “It’s made me realise that engineering is definitely the right path for me,” he says. “I’d questioned it before, but this experience has shown me what the job is really like, and it’s a lot more enjoyable than just studying it.”

Spencer strongly encourages other students to consider a placement at CMP. “It gives you real insight into the industry and helps you figure out if it’s the right path for you,” he explains. Summing up his experience in three words, he said: “Exciting. Beneficial. Challenging.”
