Cable Cleats in Data Centres: What is the Importance of Using Them?

On the 11th of December, CMP’s Business Development Manager responsible for the Data Centres sector, Brian O’Neill, took to the stage at ‘Power Ex Live’ in London to highlight the importance of using cable cleats in data centres. The event, hosted by the Data Centre Alliance (DCA) provided the opportunity for CMP to present the reasonings as to why cable cleats are the way forward for protecting data centres during the commissioning and operational phases, and their significance according to the IEC 61914 standards.

The session welcomed delegates from all backgrounds from the design, build and operation phase through to the supply of technology for data‑centre

environments, with Brian sharing knowledge of the safety and efficiency benefits using cable cleats as opposed to traditional methods of cable ties and the integral role they play in protecting data centres.

What makes a cleat better than a cable tie?

To answer this question, Brian helped the audience to visualise the important reasonings as to what makes a cable cleat superior to the standard cable tie through a suite of videos and visual imaging.

When describing the benefits of using a cable cleat Brian focused on five key points.

Cable cleats:

  1. Reduce the mechanical load on termination or joints, giving an extra level of protection to these critical areas
  2. Control expansion of the cable, due to the increase in cable temperature
  3. Guide and restrains the cable regardless of the orientation it is laid (manages the cable and holds it in formation)
  4. Reduce the mechanical load cables may be exposed to under its own weight

Brian showcased scenarios based on what the impact of using the wrong product and installation calculations can have on the operational functions and costs for da

ta centres. Using a video, he demonstrated examples of incorrect spacing calculations, and how electrical fault conditions can cause further issues from re-design and re-work, leading to increased manufacturing lead times and avoidable escalation in both operational costs and project time delays.

It is great that CMP is given opportunities to present at leading industry events, such as Power Ex Live, demonstrating our expertise in cable cleats and recognising the company as a trusted voice in our field.
