Award Winning Apprenticeship Success, Tee-Jay Smithen: A Fourth Year CNC Machinist Apprentice at CMP Products
At British Engines, our apprentices are central to our long-term success. We are proud to invest in individuals who demonstrate strong work ethic, continuous improvement and a commitment to teamwork.
Tee-Jay Smithen, a fourth year CNC Machinist Apprentice at CMP Products, embodies these values. His journey has been marked by exceptional personal growth, outstanding technical capability and professional maturity, alongside a clear willingness to share knowledge and support those around him.
These qualities were recognised at the British Engines Beyond Awards, where Tee-Jay received both the 3rd Year Apprentice Award and the prestigious HT Lamb Award – celebrating not only technical excellence, but also collaboration, leadership potential and contribution to team development.
Beginning an Apprenticeship at British Engines
Prior to joining the British Engines apprenticeship scheme, Tee-Jay worked in the retail sector at a local supermarket. With limited prior exposure to engineering, he was seeking a career path that combined hands-on learning with structured development.
British Engines stood out to Tee-Jay due to its strong reputation, clear values, proven results and well-established apprenticeship structure, offering a reliable and professional environment in which to develop long-term skills.
“My knowledge of the industry was very limited. I knew parts and components were manufactured, but I didn’t understand how or what their overall purpose was.”
Developing Technical and Professional Skills
As Tee-Jay has progressed through his apprenticeship, his responsibilities have expanded in line with his growing capability and confidence. His current role includes:
- Completing pre-use equipment and safety checks
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings
- Setting and operating CNC machinery
- Training and supporting a new apprentice
British Engines’ approach to apprenticeships combines workplace experience with formal learning. Tee-Jay highlights the value of weekly day release, alongside the flexibility and support provided by CMP to ensure a healthy balance between work and study.
“My learning continues every day, developing my skills and knowledge while gaining experience from the colleagues around me.”
Qualifications and Continuous Learning
Tee-Jay takes pride in his academic and practical achievements, which include:
- Level 2 Machining Qualification
- Crane Course Certification
- Level 3 Machining Technician (in progress)
- HNC in Manufacturing Engineering
These qualifications reflect British Engines’ commitment to providing apprentices with industry-recognised training that supports long-term career progression.
Achievements and Key Projects
Throughout his apprenticeship, Tee-Jay has received recognition from mentors, shift leads, senior management and directors for his performance and attitude.
A standout achievement was his involvement in a major project with PED, supporting the setup of the Mori Gantry SG machine – a critical capability for CMP’s SG manufacturing.
“This was an important project for CMP, and I was heavily involved as the CNC setter and operator working alongside PED. It was challenging at first, but I worked hard to ensure the machine was set up and operating to the required standard.”
Long-Term Career Development
Tee-Jay believes his apprenticeship has provided him with transferable skills, practical experience and recognised qualifications that will support him throughout his career.
“It has set me up for long-term success and helped me continue developing within the company.”
Looking ahead, Tee-Jay sees his future firmly within the British Engines Group, progressing into a more senior role and contributing to ongoing improvement and growth.
Advice for Future Apprentices
Tee-Jay strongly encourages others to consider an apprenticeship with British Engines:
“The schemes are well structured and supportive, offering real-life qualifications, skills and experience. If someone wants hands-on learning in a professional, welcoming and educational environment, British Engines is the ideal place.”
Reflecting on his journey, Tee-Jay adds that he wishes he had applied sooner – describing British Engines as the best organisation to undertake an apprenticeship with.
