Special Conditions for Safe Use

It is important to note that Special Conditions for Safe Use may exist for a product or piece of equipment which set conditions or limitations that if not observed will usually invalidate the hazardous area certification.

Some limitations may relate to temperature ratings or time delays before opening the equipment enclosure after isolation of the power supply, and may have an impact on the operational efficiency of the process.

As all Special Conditions for Safe Use should be considered and taken into account during the selection process for any hazardous area equipment, CMP promote the following recommendation. Please ask for this information from all manufacturers in advance of purchasing product, before it is too late!

Special Conditions for Safe Use have been in existence within CENELEC product certification for a number of years so these are nothing new, but possibly take on a new meaning under our current ATEX focus.

These are detailed within the Hazardous area certification document, and the document will usually be identified with a suffix letter 'X' denoting that special conditions for safe use do apply.

Often the special conditions will have an affect not only on the operation of the product or equipment itself but also impact on other aspects of the plant that may be preferably avoided.

Conditions for safe use should be, but are not always highlighted to the user by the manufacturer "up front". It may be that if the information were provided more readily and more often, the operator may have chosen different solutions.

It is recommended to ask for the details in advance of purchasing material so that a full and meaningful comparative appraisal of products can be achieved.

In accordance with the corresponding hazardous area certification documents obtained by CMP Products, the following is an overview of Special Conditions for Safe Use that apply to the product types named below :-

Special Conditions For Safe Use

  • The glands shall only be used on enclosures where the temperature, at the point of mounting, is in the range -60°C to +130°C.
  • When used with braided cable, the glands shall be used for fixed installations only. Cables must be effectively clamped to prevent pulling or twisting.
  • When used in Group I applications, the equipment shall only be mounted where the risk of mechanical impact is low.
  • When assembled for fitting to flexible conduit, the conduit shall be effectively clamped to prevent twisting and pulling

  • Type 780 range of metallic unions
    • Unions shall not be subjected to installation torques above the following values:

    • The female threaded component insert shall be held stationary whilst attaching a further cable entry device ensuring the flamepath spigot joint is not enlarged.
  • Type 781 range of metallic breather/drain plugs
    • The Breather/Drain plug shall be fitted to the lowest point on the bottom face of its associated enclosure.
    • The Breather/Drain shall not be used in enclosures where the temperature, at the point of mounting, is outside the range of -20°C to +60°C.
  • Type 787 range of right angled adaptors
    • The following right angled adaptors thread form and sizes shall not be subjected to installation torques above the following values:

  • The following conditions are applicable to non-metallic adaptors, reducers and stopping plugs
    • Types 737, 747, 757, & 767 Non metallic Adaptors, Reducers and Stopping Plugs shall not be used in enclosures where the temperature, at the point of mounting, is outside the range of -20°C to +60°C.
    • The Adaptors, Reducers and Stopping Plugs shall be assembled in such a way that their protrusion from the associated enclosure is not increased.
    • Any cable gland used with the adaptors and reducers shall be non-metallic and of the A2 type.
    • Refer to the manufacturers instructions for the action necessary regarding electrostatic risk.
    • The interfaces between the male thread and the adaptor/reducer and an associated enclosure and between a female thread of the adaptor/reducer and the cable entry device cannot be defined. Therefore it is the installer's responsibility to ensure that the appropriate ingress protection level is maintained at these interfaces

Special Conditions For Safe Use - SIRA 02ATEX1003X

  • As above SIRA 01ATEX1284U but with the following additons
    • To prevent undue protrusion, it is recommended that only one adaptor or reducer be fitted to each cable entry

Special Conditions For Safe Use - SIRA 01ATEX1284U

  • The Type 777 range of insulated adaptors shall not be used in enclosures where the temperature, at the point of mounting is outside the range of -60°C to +130°C.
  • Based on the smallest male or female thread size used in the construction of the Type 777 Insulated Adaptor that they are installed, the following table shall be used by the installer to determine the maximum, applicable tightening torque and, when the Adaptor is being assembled and fitted into associated equipment, this torque shall not be exceeded
  • Smallest male or female thread size M20 M25 M32 M40 M50 M63 M75 M90

Special Conditions For Safe Use - SIRA06ATEX1097X

  • All body components of the C**-Type and E**-Type Ranges shall be fully tightened using all available threads of engagement until against their adjoining component part shoulder to maintain Ingress protection rating IP66.
  • The E**-Type Ranges of cable glands shall not be used to terminate on braided cables in group I applications.
  • The cable gland ranges shall only be used where the temperature, at the point of entry, is in the following ranges:
    Type A2F, A2E ranges of cable glands: -60°C to +130°C
    Type A2FRC ranges of cable glands: -60°C to +130°C
    Type A2F-FC ranges of cable glands: -60°C to +130°C
    Type SS2K ranges of cable glands: -60°C to +130°C
    Type SS2KPB ranges of cable glands: -60°C to +130°C
    Type C** range of cable glands: -60°C to +130°C
    Type E** ranges of cable glands: -60°C to +130°C
    Type PX** ranges of cable glands: -60°C to +100°C compound filled.
    Type PX** ranges of cable glands: -60°C to +85°C resin filled.
    Type A4ERC range of cable glands:- 60°C to +130°C
  • All ranges of cable glands fitted with flameproof elastomeric seals are certified with one specific size of FLP sealing ring per gland size as supplied.
  • The C**-Type and E**- Type and PX**- Type Ranges used for terminating braided cables are only suitable for fixed installations. Cables must be effectively clamped to prevent pulling or twisting.
  • The A2F, A2E, SS2K & SS2KPB size 20s/16 cable entries are only suitable for fixed installations. Cables must be effectively clamped to prevent pulling or twisting.
  • The entry component threads may need additional sealing to maintain the ingress protection rating as applicable to the associated equipment in which it will be attached.
  • The Type PXB2KW gland is to be protected from hydraulic fluids, oils, and greases when applied for Group I use.
  • When the A2F, A2E, A2FRC, A2F-FC, SS2K, SS2KPB, Type C**, Type E** and Type PX** ranges of cable glands are supplied with an entry thread that is one size up from the nominal gland size, designated with the letter ‘B’ after the gland size, e.g. 32BE1FW1RA, they shall not be used with any adaptor device.
  • When assembled for fitting to flexible conduit, the conduit shall be effectively clamped to prevent twisting and pulling.
